Iran Faces Visa Challenges Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Iranian soccer officials are working with FIFA to secure visas for their team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The tournament begins next week and will take place in North America.

Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s soccer federation, addresses the ongoing visa issue. A former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Taj blames the United States for the current uncertainties. He asserts that Iran’s participation in the tournament has been compromised by various diplomatic challenges.

Taj revealed that Iran, initially slated to set up its World Cup base in the United States, had to relocate to Tijuana, Mexico. This decision followed talks with FIFA and amid ongoing tensions between the countries. The move aims to limit the team’s time in the U.S. and ease visa complications.

According to Taj, Iran was the third team to qualify for the World Cup, which will see unprecedented participation with 48 teams. This tournament is unique as it features a host nation at odds with another participating country. Despite the preparations being affected, Iranian team officials continue to plan and adapt, holding practice sessions in Turkey for the past month.

As Iran navigates the diplomatic challenges, the country remains focused on ensuring its national team can compete effectively in the tournament.
